Goodwin Date of Interview 1996 Biographical Text Alice Ward Boyer arrived in Las Vegas from Oklahoma in 1937. Her brother and former husband came earlier to escape the dustbowl depression and get settled. In the middle of the summer, just at dusk, she emerged from the train at Kingman, Arizona with her two small children to meet her family and drive through the darkness to her new home in Las Vegas. Born in rural Oklahoma, she spent her early years on a ranch. Alice graduated from high school just as the Great Depression began and worked briefly at a newspaper before marriage. Her recollections revive the older Las Vegas when community life characterized the small town. At the heart of her story is the Mesquite Club. The non-partisan civic activities of the Mesquite Club are part of a national history of women’s club voluntarism in the nineteenth and twentieth century United States. Founded in 1911, this pioneer Las Vegas women’s club played an essential role in the development of the growing town. Alice Boyer joined the Mesquite club in 1944. She first served as the chair of the Garden Committee, then “went right up through the chairs,” and was elected President of the club for 1958-59. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. Alice Boyer died February 16, 2008 in Pennsylvania at 94 years old. White Date of Interview February 17, 1997 Biographical Text Alice Key made contributions to the state of Nevada as a journalist, community activist, and political leader. She was the co-host of the first all-black television talk show in Las Vegas and was active in fighting for civil rights in Nevada and California.Alice was born in Henderson, Kentucky on March 18, 1911. As a young child, she moved to Riverside, California with her mother and the family of her uncle’s wife. She finished high school in Riverside and then went to UCLA to pursue a degree in Journalism. Her mother managed a coffee shop near the famous Club Alabam in central L.A. Key met a girl there who worked at the Cotton Club who eventually persuaded her to dance at the club, too. She left school and danced for the next five years. Her career as a dancer took her to New York where she worked at the Ubangi Club and later she spent six months in Europe touring with the Cotton Club Show.In 1943, Key ended her dancing career and started working as a writer for a black newspaper, the Los Angeles Tribune. In 1954, she moved to Las Vegas to take a job working for the Las Vegas Voice. Not long after her arrival, she and Bob Bailey started the first all-black television talk show in Las Vegas, “Talk of the Town”, which lasted for several months. In the 1960s, Key became the public relations manager for the Nevada Committee for the Rights of Women, which promoted education about birth control and fought for reforms to the abortion laws in Nevada. After that position, she worked for the Economic Opportunity Board until 1971. In 1983, Governor Richard Bryan named Key Deputy Commissioner of Labor, a position she held for ten years. She also involved herself in political campaigns, the NAACP, and founded the Barbara Jordan Democratic Women’s Club. Since retiring from public services, Key worked to preserve the history of black Las Vegas through the Moulin Rouge Preservation Association and the Black History Society, Inc. Alice Key continued to reside in Las Vegas until her death. Her dedication to equality and commitment to her community helped to lower barriers faced by women and African Americans in Nevada. White Date of Interview March 3, 1996 Biographical Text Alma Whitney moved to Las Vegas from Tallulah, Louisiana when she was sixteen years of age to stay with her sister. She told the interviewer that she moved because she could make more money in Las Vegas than back home in 1952. In Tallulah, she earned between $1.50 and $2.50 a day working in private homes or picking cotton, respectively. In Las Vegas, she found work as a housekeeper at the Desert Inn. She worked cleaning rooms for fourteen years, and then received a promotion to supervisor of housekeeping which she held for twenty-five years. Alma remembers the early Las Vegas Westside peppered with little shacks with dirt floors, unpaved streets, and tiny trailer parks. She had expected more liberal attitudes concerning race relations than she found in Las Vegas. Nevertheless, the town’s burgeoning gaming industry provided opportunities to work and to make a good living. She and her husband (who worked at Nellis Air Force Base) purchased a beautiful home on the Westside and reared five children. They carved out a full life by enjoying and supporting the institutions on the Westside: the church and schools for her children, and the clubs of Jackson Street for the adults. Alma Whitney’s story was collected as part of the series on women working in the gaming industry. It also provides information on the African American migration to Las Vegas during the 1940s, post-war race relations in Las Vegas, the daily work of hotel maids, and the culinary union. Amy helps clients on their journey to share their stories, find peace behind the podium, and move audiences to action. Amy has been appointed by various Nevada Governors and Senators to four state and federal commissions. She was the first female appointed to the Athletic Commission, better known as the boxing commission. In February 2013, she testified before the Nevada State Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees, using her personally inspiring survivor story in support of Assembly Bill 67, which increased penalties for those convicted of sex trafficking. Work/Contribution Dancer and businesswoman Birth Date August 26, 1926 Birthplace Savannah, Georgia Arrival in Las Vegas 1955 Biographical Text Anna Bailey moved to Brooklyn with her mother as a child, and began dance lessons at ten years old. At thirteen, she danced at the Apollo. By fifteen, she was a professional dancer. Her mother insisted she continue her education, so attended high school while dancing in large productions in New York. She travelled extensively as a dancer, going on tour to Europe and Los Angeles. In 1951, she married fellow performer Bob Bailey, a singer and emcee. The couple lived in Anna mother’s basement. In 1955, the Baileys moved to Las Vegas, to open the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino. Just six months later, the Rouge closed, leaving both Anna and her husband, Bob, without work. The couple continued to work in show business, with Anna dancing on the Strip and on tour, and Bob hosting talk shows. Following the birth of her two children, Anna gave up dancing. The Baileys opened and operated several small nightclubs. This interview covers Anna’s experience as a dancer extensively, with her earliest performances through her retirement. As curator of UNLV’s Special Collections, she convinced area pioneers to donate their photos and papers. As an oral historian, she made sure that individuals’ stories would be preserved. And as the founder of the historic preservation effort in southern Nevada, she is given credit for saving the Las Vegas Mormon Fort as well as founding families’ homes. Anna Dean Nohl was born May 12, 1938 in Seattle, Washington. She received two master’s degrees in New York State and then moved to Las Vegas in 1973 with her husband, Jack Kepper, a geology professor. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Kepper was active in university affairs through service on committees such as budget and planning, procedures and policy, public relations, museum of natural history, and beautification, in addition to her work for UNLV Special Collections. She was the curator of Special Collections from 1975 until her death in 1983. Kepper was equally as devoted to historic preservation outside of the university. She held numerous memberships in historic organizations, such as the Preservation Association of Clark County, the Southern Nevada Historical Society, Boulder City Museum and Historical Association, Nevada Historical Society, and the Nevada State Library Association. She was also active in the American Association for State and Local History, Intermountain Archivists, Society of California Archivists, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where she served as Nevada’s representative. In 1974, Kepper founded the Association of the Preservation of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort, which later became the Preservation Association of Clark County, serving as president from 1974-1979. Also, Kepper was a moving force in the relocation of historic downtown homes. Kepper coordinated Houssels House’s relocation to the UNLV campus for adaptive use as architectural studies classrooms. As advisor to the Junior League, Kepper aided in the restoration of pioneer businessman Will Beckley’s house at the Museum of Southern Nevada. In 1980, Kepper was recognized for her hard work as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Nevada Historical Preservation Conference. In 1982, she received the Certificate of Merit from the Southern Nevada Historical Society. Kepper was also honored by the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association for helping Boulder City gain entrance to the National Register as a historic site. Kepper died of cancer at fifty on December 20, 1983. UNLV posthumously awarded Kepper a Master’s of Public Administration for which she had passed her final comprehensive examination eighteen days prior to her death. Goodwin Date of Interview June 24, 1996 Biographical Text Born in the coal fields of Strunk, Kentucky, Audrey Aline Messer Wickman first visited the West at twelve years of age. She moved to western Colorado to help in her grandparents’ home for a couple of years. The stay made a lasting impression because she only returned to her birthplace for a short time after that. In Colorado, she graduated from high school, met her future husband, and married in 1925. They came to southern Nevada in 1932 so that Robert Wickman could find work on Hoover Dam. Audrey Wickman joined the Mesquite Club in 1936 and has remained a member to date. She started the Literary Committee as a forum to share book reviews and hear speakers. She served as President of the club for 1947-48 and chose the year’s theme “Know your Neighbor.” In the post-war society, women’s involvement in civic affairs was particularly needed, she told the membership at the opening fall meeting. “The troubles which unsettle the world today are primarily ones which lie within the sphere of women’s business. They are matters of housekeeping, teaching and health. . . . The time has come when we as a nation cannot stay in our own backyards. . . . If we are to be good world citizens, local, state and national, we must first be good home citizens. These responsibilities call for knowledge, an appreciation of other points of view, and attitudes of good will and cooperation.” (Las Vegas Review Journal, 6 October 1947, Mesquite Club microfilm collection.) The duties of the president varied during those years. She recalled that “I was janitor, gardener and President.” During the wintertime, she remembered, “you had to have heat [for Friday’s meeting] and I’d go up on Thursday afternoon and light that old oil burning stove and then pray that it didn’t catch the place on fire all night.” She continued her commitment to club work by serving as state secretary for the Nevada Federation of Women’s Clubs. The friendships and cultural events which came from Mesquite Club and Federation membership proved to be of lasting value for this community builder. She attended Hanover College in southern Indiana, where she spent a year studying abroad at the University of Exeter in Devonshire, England. She graduated Hanover in 1957 with a triple major in English, speech, and theater. Agonia spent her first years out of college teaching high school English, speech, and theater in northern Illinois. At the age of 35, she decided to pursue a Master’s degree in English. In 1969, she moved to Las Vegas and enrolled in the English Department at UNLV. As Agonia completed her degree in 1971, the community college system in Nevada was emerging and seeking faculty for the new institution. Agonia was among the first eight new faculty members at Clark County Community College, now known as College of Southern Nevada. In her early years with the college, Agonia did a great deal of public speaking on behalf on the newly formed system, promoting the new institution and reaching out to potential students. At the same time, she taught full course loads in composition and literature, and eventually became chair of the English department. In the 1980s approached, Agonia became actively involved in rape crisis education, at the urging of Florence McClure. She also helped establish a Women’s Center on the Clark County Community College campus. In addition to her involvement in and commitment to public education, Agonia has also been involved in the Soroptimist International organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local and international communities.
